Mother’s Day is an annual holiday that recognizes mothers , motherhood and maternal bonds in general, as well the positive contributions that they make to society. In the United States, it is celebrated on the second Sunday in May.

[edit] First attempts to establish a holiday

Early “Mother’s Day” in the U.S. was mostly marked by women’s peace groups.^[1] A common early activity was the meeting of groups of mothers whose sons had fought or died on opposite sides of the American Civil War . There were several local celebrations in the 1870s and the 1880s, but none achieved resonance beyond the local level.^[2]

In 1868 Ann Jarvis created a committee to establish a “Mother’s Friendship Day” whose purpose was “to reunite families that had been divided during the Civil War”, and she wanted to expand it into an annual memorial for mothers, but she died in 1905 before the celebration became popular.^[3]^[2] (Her daughter Anna Jarvis would continue her mother’s effort shortly later, see below.)

In New York City, Julia Ward Howe led a “Mother’s Day” anti-war observance in 2nd June, 1872^[1]^[4]^[2], which was accompanied by a Mother’s Day Proclamation . The observance continued in Boston for about 10 years under Howe’s personal sponsorship, then it died out.^[5]

Several years later, a Mother’s Day observance on May 13, 1877 was held in Albion, Michigan , over a dispute related to the temperance movement .^[6] According to local legend, Albion pioneer, Juliet Calhoun Blakeley, stepped up to complete the sermon of the Rev. Myron Daughterty, who was distraught because an anti-temperance group had forced his son and two other temperance advocates to spend the night in a saloon and become publicly drunk. In the pulpit, Blakeley called on other mothers to join her. Blakeley’s two sons, both traveling salesmen, were so moved that they vowed to return each year to pay tribute to her and embarked on a campaign to urge their business contacts to do likewise. At their urging, in the early 1880s, the Methodist Episcopal Church in Albion set aside the second Sunday in May to recognize the special contributions of mothers.

Frank E. Hering , President of the Fraternal Order of Eagles , made the first known public plea for “a national day to honor our mothers” in 1904.^[7]^[8]

[edit] Holiday establishment

In its present form, Mother’s Day was established by Anna Marie Jarvis , following the death of her mother Ann Jarvis on May 9, 1905, with the help of a Philadelphia merchant called John Wanamaker .^[2] A small service was held in 12 May 1907 in the Andrew’s Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton, West Virginia , where Anna’s mother had been teaching Sunday school .^[2] But the first “official” service was in 10 May 1908 in the same church, accompanied by a larger ceremony in the Wanamaker Auditorium in the Wanamaker’s store on Philadelphia.^[2] She then campaigned to establish Mother’s Day as a U.S. national holiday, and later as an international holiday.^[1]^[2]

The holiday was declared officially by the state of West Virginia in 1910, and the rest of states followed quickly.^[2] On May 8, 1914, the U.S. Congress passed a law designating the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day and requesting a proclamation. On May 9, 1914, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation, declaring the first national Mother’s Day,^[9]^[10] as a day for American citizens to show the flag in honor of those mothers whose sons had died in war.^[9]

In 1934, U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt approved a stamp commemorating the holiday.^[11]

In May 2008, the U.S. House of Representatives voted twice on a resolution commemorating Mother’s Day^[12]^[13], the first one being unanimous so that all congressmen would be on record showing support for Mother’s Day.^[^{citation needed]}

The Grafton’s church, where the first celebration was held, is now the International Mother’s Day Shrine and is a National Historic Landmark .^[14]

Carnations have come to represent Mother’s Day, since Anna Jarvis delivered 500 of them at its first celebration in 1908.^[10]^[2]^[14] Many religious services held later copied the custom of giving away carnations.^[2] This also started the custom of wearing a carnation on Mother’s Day.^[7] The founder, Anna Jarvis, chose the carnation because it was the favorite flower of her mother.^[15] In part due to the shortage of white carnations, and in part due to the efforts to expand the sales of more types of flowers in Mother’s Day, the florists promoted wearing a red carnation if your mother was living, or a white one if she was dead; this was tirelessly promoted until it made its way into the popular observations at churches.^[7]^[16]

In the United States, “Mother’s Day Work Clubs” were organized by Anna Jarvis’s mother, Ann Maria Reeves Jarvis (1832-1905), to improve sanitation and health in the area. These clubs also assisted both Union and Confederate encampments controlling a typhoid outbreak, and conducted a “Mothers’ Friendship Day” to reconcile families divided by the Civil War.

She wanted a special gift for her own clients at the time and realized that every gift basket out there was sorely lacking. She found one little company that had a good clientele, a hard working owner, and a pretty good concept and bought the business. She had an idea of what a top-notch basket should deliver and set out to create the one she had hoped to order for herself…and the rest is history!

My little dog just had Rat Terrier/Doxie mix puppies about a week ago audit’s amazing what a natural instinct Motherhood is. The dog had a C-Section and was literally gaining consciousness in the car on the way home from the vet - with 3 little squealing babies in a box on top of a towel covered hot water bottle. She was so stunned and confused, she was shaking…having no real idea what had just happened or what all the niggling little squeaking was all about. The minute we got her home and put her in the Whelping Box….it’s like she had done it a thousand times before….she just started licking the babies - moving to let them hook up to her and nurse and immediately a “calm” came over her.

It was a testament to the fact that Motherhood is such a natural dynamic drive and then it lasts a whole lifetime of being nervous when they have to go to school the first day - to driving the first time alone - to moving into a life of their own for the first time…. once a Mother always a Mother.

There is no taking that hat off once it’s on…ever. Only right that we have a day especially for Mom’s who wear that hat through thick and thin from the day they take us on…to the day they die.

Patriots’ Day (sometimes incorrectly punctuated Patriot’s Day or Patriots Day) is a civic holiday commemorating the anniversary of the Battles of Lexington and Concord, the first battles of the American Revolutionary War. It is observed in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts^[1] and state of Maine^[2] (once part of Massachusetts), and is a public school observance day in Wisconsin.^[3] Observances and re-enactments of these first battles of the American Revolution occur annually at Lexington Green in Lexington, Massachusetts, (around 6am) and The Old North Bridge in Concord, Massachusetts (around 9am). In the morning, a mounted reenactor with State Police escort retraces Paul Revere’s ride, calling out warnings the whole way.

Since 1969, the holiday has been observed on the third Monday in April, providing a three-day long weekend. Previously, it had been designated as April 19 in observance of the anniversary of the Battles of Lexington and Concord, the first battles of the American Revolutionary War. It is also a school holiday for many local colleges and universities, both public and private.

The Boston Marathon is run on Patriots’ Day every year so many Bostonians know the holiday as “Marathon Monday”. Maine’s oldest road race, the Boys and Girls Clubs Patriots’ Day 5-Miler, is held in Portland.

The Boston Red Sox have traditionally been scheduled to play at home in Fenway Park on Patriots’ Day every year since 1959. They were postponed due to bad weather in 1959, 1961, 1965, 1967, and 1984 and did not play in 1995 during the players’ strike. Since 1968 the games have started early in the morning around 11:00 AM. In 2007, the game had a scheduled start of 10:05 AM, but was delayed due to rain until 12:18 PM. The early start to these games usually resulted in the game ending just as the marathon is heading through Kenmore Square. However, since 2007 the marathon has started between 9:30 AM and 10:00 AM, resulting in the racers going through Kenmore towards the middle of the Red Sox game.

[edit] Tax Day implications

Occasionally, the U.S. federal Tax Day falls on this day or the preceding weekend, causing the federal income tax return filing deadline to be extended by one day for the residents of Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Upstate New York, Vermont, and the District of Columbia. This is because the IRS processing center for these areas is located in Andover, Massachusetts^[4]. In 2007, this extension was granted to the entire country because the District of Columbia holiday, Emancipation Day, coincidentally fell on the same day.^[5] In addition to these extensions, in 2007 due to a nor’easter (which also forced the first-ever cancellation of the annual 6 a.m. battle re-enactment on Lexington Green), certain states were granted an additional two days for taxes, bringing the deadline to April 19. Those who filed under this extension had to write “April 16 Storm” on the return.^[6]
